Introduction to the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)

Every student deserves to feel safe and supported in school, but unfortunately, this isn't always the case.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2019-2020, about 1 in 5 students ages 12 through 18 reported that they had been bullied at school during the past month. The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), which took effect on July 1, 2012, seeks to create a safe and supportive learning environment for all students in New York State. DASA prohibits discrimination and harassment in schools based on a student's actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity and expression), or sex.

What Is Covered In The DASA training workshop?

In order to ensure that all students in New York State receive a safe and supportive learning environment, the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) was passed in 2010. In order to ensure that all school staff is properly trained in how to implement DASA, the state education department requires that all employees complete a DASA training workshop in order to receive their NY state teaching certification.

The DASA training workshop covers a variety of topics, including:

  • What is discrimination, harassment, and bullying?
  • The different forms that these behaviors can take.
  • How to identify and report incidents of discrimination, harassment, and bullying.
  • What are a school's responsibilities under DASA?
  • How to effectively respond to incidents of discrimination, harassment, and bullying.
  • How to create a positive school climate that is respectful and inclusive for all students.

The DASA training workshop is offered by a variety of organizations throughout New York State.
Some organizations offer the DASA training online, such as NYSED approved Education Workers Group, while others offer in-person workshops that require you to schedule a day and attend for six hours.
No matter which type of DASA training you choose to complete, it is important to make sure that you are getting the most up-to-date information on how to implement DASA in your school effectively.

How can you register for the NYC DASA training course online?

DASA training online is required for all school personnel in NYC, but the workshops can be hard to find and attend.
